As Spring beckons, there is hope that our social calendar may soon be opening up, so it’s crucial to ensure our immune system is strong as we head out of lockdown to protect our health and wellbeing.
Our immune system is the body’s natural defence against harmful viruses and bacteria, it is made up of a network of cells, tissues, organs, and molecules which work together to protect the body from any harmful germs or substances by triggering an immune response. When your immune system is working well, it can prevent germs from entering your body and, if harmful cells do get in, it can limit the harm that they do.
The body needs many vitamins and minerals to function properly.
Vitamin C is one of these nutrients and it is essential to the normal function of our immune system.
Stimulating the production and activation of immune cells, Vitamin C supports cellular functions of the innate and adaptive immune systems and it contributes to three main mechanisms of immune protection, including:
Helping to strengthen skin and tissues to prevent viral invasion.
Increasing white blood cell and antibody production to target viruses.
Helping to clear spent white blood cells to maintain tissue health.
Crucially, vitamin C has the ability to protect our white blood cells from invading pathogens and researchers believe that white blood cells draw in vitamin C to help protect from oxidants, increase oxidant regeneration and to ensure any pathogens are killed.
Who is most at-risk of Vitamin C deficiency?
The most common risk factors for vitamin C deficiency include poor diet, malabsorption disorders (such as Crohn’s, Colitis and Coeliac disease), food allergies and anorexia. The elderly and those taking certain medications such as aspirin, oral contraceptives, and some anti-inflammatories, can also be at higher risk of deficiency and frequent supplementation is advised.
Stress, smoking and alcoholism as well as a fever and viral infections can also negatively impact our levels of vitamin C, so if these lifestyle factors affect you, larger daily intakes be required.
How can I ensure I’m getting enough vitamin C?
Unlike animals, humans cannot naturally produce vitamin C and as it is a water-soluble vitamin, our body does not store it, so supplementation is advised to maintain levels as well as regularly eating foods, such as:
Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries
Green and red peppers
Sweet and white potatoes
It’s important to have a food-first approach, but if you struggle to get enough vitamin C a supplement can be a simple and convenient way to increase and maintain levels.
The phrase ‘little and often’ can be helpfully applied to vitamin C supplementation, with absorption believed to drastically reduce as our intake increases. Consuming high levels of vitamin C (500mg and above) results in a rapid decline in absorption efficiency, meaning that supplementing high doses is not beneficial, as it will simply pass through the body.
Healthy individuals are recommended to supplement 100mg of vitamin C per day, an amount that is associated with a decreased risk of mortality from heart disease and stroke.
Some of us, particularly children and the elderly, can find tablets and capsules difficult to swallow, so traditional supplementation methods do not always suit everyone.
Alternative routes, such as vitamin oral spray products, are readily available online as well as on the high-street and with studies showing that they are just as effective at elevating our vitamin levels as traditional capsules, this could be the pill-free supplementation solution we have all been looking for.

Inside you right now are trillions of microorganisms, some of which are supporting your health, while others could be harming your health – giving you breakouts, making you feel sick, bloated, and sluggish.
How you feel really does come down to the overall balance of bacteria in your gut.
What affects the balance?
Antibiotics are known to suppress the beneficial bacteria and change the balance. Stress also has a big impact. Stress comes in all shapes and sizes, from your emotional state (like when you’re trying to homeschool, whilst working full time and keeping your home in some kind of order!) to your physical wellbeing (like overloading the body with sugar or toxins or even going for an intense training session, which is where TYG is your ally).
Sources of probiotics:
Fermented drinks have become increasingly popular, with kombucha and kefir available in most supermarkets, but do we actually know why we’re drinking them and their benefits? Interestingly, whilst kombucha is a great soft drink or even alcohol alternative, the probiotics found in kombucha aren’t native to the gut microbiome, meaning you’re not going to be replacing any good bacteria that you might be missing. Given it’s tea based, arguably one of the key benefits are its antioxidant properties. Kefir on the other hand does contain good bacteria, native to the microbiome and is a great source of B vitamins, which are key for energy production. Other sources include yoghurts, TYG and of course probiotic supplements.
What to consider with the strain of probiotic:
One of the biggest questions to ask yourself when it comes to probiotics is: will they actually reach my gut alive so I experience their benefits? After consumption, they’ve got to pass through the stomach to reach your gut. Our stomachs are highly acidic, as this is where chemical digestion of our food takes place. This acidic environment can kill probiotics before they even get to the gut if they’re not properly encapsulated. Most reputable brands will inform you of how their probiotic withstands stomach acid, like we do with TYG.
How long does it take for probiotic supplements to work?
The short answer: It depends. There are several factors that come into play, like why you’re taking the probiotic, the state of your health, and the strains you’re taking, to name a few. That being said, researchers have looked at the timeline for several common conditions that probiotics are known to support and found some similarities. If you put all the research together, the general consensus is that it can take anywhere from a couple of days to several weeks for your probiotics to start working. Consistency is key, supporting optimal gut health is all about creating healthy sustainable habits, there are no quick fixes sadly.
How you know if they’re working:
The best way to know if a probiotic is working for you is trying it consistently for a number of weeks and keeping track of any changes to your symptoms. Try keeping a symptom journal, so you can see if things are improving. The more severe or significant your symptoms before starting a probiotic, the easier it is to notice changes. Since probiotics are taken orally and must pass through the digestive tract, digestive symptoms are often the first ones to improve such as bowel movement consistency, frequency and gas, but don’t be surprised if you start to notice things like your skin improving, mood and even sleep patterns!

Winter does feel never ending, doesn’t it? I always use the Winter solstice on the 21st December as a mental turning point, it means Spring is on its way – albeit rather slowly 🌞
With the Winter solstice firmly behind us (and 2020 for that matter), we can look forward to warmer weather & lighter days. But in the meantime, our January Lifebox is an ode to seasonal immunity and supporting a good mood!
Once there was a Doctor, who all night long dreamt of breakfast. That’s because he’d made it the night before, and it was chilling so that the ingredients became deliciously soft and digestible. His name was Dr Bircher. Although you can buy instant Bircher Muesli nowadays, this recipe pays respect to Dr Bircher’s Swiss levels of organisation.
TIME: Overnight + 5 mins prep
150ml Rude Health Oat or Almond Milk
1 apple or pear, grated
90g gluten-free coconut muesli
60ml apple juice
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp sesame seeds
2 tbsp rose petals (optional)
Grate the apple and mix with the milk, muesli, apple juice and cinnamon.
Cover and place in the fridge overnight.
Chop the walnuts and mix with the pumpkin seeds.
Serve the overnight Bircher Muesli with the sesame seeds, rose petals and blueberries.

This delicious Baked Banana Porridge makes for a wonderfully indulgent breakfast or dessert!
2 bananas (1 mashed, 1 sliced)
270g oats (gluten- free)
300 ml of plant milk
1 handful of walnuts 3 (chopped)
1 Nucao almond sea-salt bar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tbsp maple syrup
1. Preheat the oven to 180*C.
2. Puree a banana and mix it with the other ingredients except the sliced banana. Add the coarsely chopped Nucao and transfer to an ovenproof bowl.
3. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until the top is firmer. Then take it out of the oven for a moment, place the sliced banana on top and put it back in the oven.
4. Bake for another 10-15 minutes, then remove. And enjoy 🙂
Did you know that there are a total of 21 amino acids that our body needs to build all of the vital proteins?

You might be wondering, what exactly is a Pili nut?

Autumn is fully under way and we’re starting to brace for colder weather and darker days! I’m a huge fan of October – not just because it’s my birthday month – but also because it’s a great excuse for cosy jumpers and hot baths.
As we enter into the colder months of the year, our immune system has to work extra hard to ward off any unwanted germs or bugs that thrive in the chillier weather.
That’s why this month’s Lifebox is an ode to Autumn Wellbeing and we’ve kitted it out with some amazing brands that will help keep you feeling your best as winter approaches.

Pesto Stuffed Arancini
*Makes 14-16 medium sized arancini balls* Gluten-Free & Vegan
500g Lemon, pea & basil risotto (or any vegan risotto) 100g BRAVE Chickpeas & 50g pistachios (or any nut of your choosing!) 100g Plain flour (We used Dove Farms GF plain flour) 75ml Plant milk 80-100g Pesto (We did a homemade pistachio and basil one) Neutral Cooking oil (For frying) Lemon wedges (To serve)
1) Heat up 6cm of oil in a large pan on medium heat to about 180°C.
2) Blitz up the chickpeas and nuts together in a blender and pour into a bowl.
3) Then pour flour into another bowl and season with salt and pepper. Pour milk into another bowl.
4) Using a dessertspoon, scoop the risotto into a ball in your hand. Press your thumb into the ball, creating a well to stuff with pesto (about half a teaspoon should do it). Cover the top with more risotto and roll into a ball.
5) First coat the ball with flour, then with milk and finish by rolling in the chickpea and nut mixture.
6) Carefully place 3-4 balls into the oil at a time. (Don’t overcrowd as it lowers the temperature of the oil). Cook for around 5-6 minutes until golden and crispy!
The days are drawing closer and the weather is playing us hot & cold. But there’s something I find magical about the seasons changing, with all the green around us gradually becoming beautiful Autumnal shades of red and brown.
As the season changes, so do our nutritional needs.
In Summer, it’s all about cooling foods rich in hydrating electrolytes and carotenoids that protect our skin from UV rays. As the temperature drops, we need more warming foods that help to nourish our body, keep our immune system supported and protect us against any pesky germs hanging around.
