Support your Immune System with Better You

Support your immune system with Keeley Berry,  Nutritional Expert and Product Developer at BetterYou Ltd.

As Spring beckons, there is hope that our social calendar may soon be opening up, so it’s crucial to ensure our immune system is strong as we head out of lockdown to protect our health and wellbeing.

Our immune system is the body’s natural defence against harmful viruses and bacteria, it is made up of a network of cells, tissues, organs, and molecules which work together to protect the body from any harmful germs or substances by triggering an immune response. When your immune system is working well, it can prevent germs from entering your body and, if harmful cells do get in, it can limit the harm that they do.

The body needs many vitamins and minerals to function properly.

Vitamin C is one of these nutrients and it is essential to the normal function of our immune system.

Stimulating the production and activation of immune cells, Vitamin C supports cellular functions of the innate and adaptive immune systems and it contributes to three main mechanisms of immune protection, including:

  1. Helping to strengthen skin and tissues to prevent viral invasion.
  2. Increasing white blood cell and antibody production to target viruses.
  3. Helping to clear spent white blood cells to maintain tissue health.

Crucially, vitamin C has the ability to protect our white blood cells from invading pathogens and researchers believe that white blood cells draw in vitamin C to help protect from oxidants, increase oxidant regeneration and to ensure any pathogens are killed.

Who is most at-risk of Vitamin C deficiency?

The most common risk factors for vitamin C deficiency include poor diet, malabsorption disorders (such as Crohn’s, Colitis and Coeliac disease), food allergies and anorexia. The elderly and those taking certain medications such as aspirin, oral contraceptives, and some anti-inflammatories, can also be at higher risk of deficiency and frequent supplementation is advised.

Stress, smoking and alcoholism as well as a fever and viral infections can also negatively impact our levels of vitamin C, so if these lifestyle factors affect you, larger daily intakes be required.

How can I ensure I’m getting enough vitamin C?

Unlike animals, humans cannot naturally produce vitamin C and as it is a water-soluble vitamin, our body does not store it, so supplementation is advised to maintain levels as well as regularly eating foods, such as:

  • Mango
  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries
  • Green and red peppers
  • Sweet and white potatoes

It’s important to have a food-first approach, but if you struggle to get enough vitamin C a supplement can be a simple and convenient way to increase and maintain levels.

The phrase ‘little and often’ can be helpfully applied to vitamin C supplementation, with absorption believed to drastically reduce as our intake increases. Consuming high levels of vitamin C (500mg and above) results in a rapid decline in absorption efficiency, meaning that supplementing high doses is not beneficial, as it will simply pass through the body.

Healthy individuals are recommended to supplement 100mg of vitamin C per day, an amount that is associated with a decreased risk of mortality from heart disease and stroke.

Some of us, particularly children and the elderly, can find tablets and capsules difficult to swallow, so traditional supplementation methods do not always suit everyone.

Alternative routes, such as vitamin oral spray products, are readily available online as well as on the high-street and with studies showing that they are just as effective at elevating our vitamin levels as traditional capsules, this could be the pill-free supplementation solution we have all been looking for.

All things Gut Health with TYG!

TYG (Train Your Gut) is a gut-health sports drink packed with functional ingredients and live bio-cultures to help optimise your performance.

If you purchased a March Lifebox you will have already received a can of Train your Gut Probiotic Drink!

TYG is the the world’s first probiotic sports drink.

TYG (Train Your Gut) is a gut-health sports drink packed with functional ingredients and live bio-cultures to help optimise your performance.

Read on to find out about why gut health is pivotal to general wellbeing and why knowing the difference between probiotic strains is so important.

What they are:

Put simply, probiotics are good bacteria. We have a mix of both good and bad bacteria in our gut microbiome and the goal for optimal gut health is to maintain a healthy balance. We can do this by introducing and supporting the growth of the good bacteria through consumption of both probiotics and prebioticsPrebiotics feed the good bacteria and are found in food sources such as green apples, bananas and oats

Why are prebiotics & probiotics important?

Your gut is often referred to as your second brain. It’s proven to influence your athleticism, immunity (70% of your immune system is housed in the gut), metabolism and even the way you thinka whopping 90% of your serotonin (the happy hormone) is said to be produced in the gut. Inside you right now are trillions of microorganisms, some of which are supporting your health, while others could be harming your health – giving you breakouts, making you feel sick, bloated, and sluggish.

How you feel really does come down to the overall balance of bacteria in your gut.

What affects the balance?

Antibiotics are known to suppress the beneficial bacteria and change the balance. Stress also has a big impact. Stress comes in all shapes and sizes, from your emotional state (like when you’re trying to homeschool, whilst working full time and keeping your home in some kind of order!) to your physical wellbeing (like overloading the body with sugar or toxins or even going for an intense training session, which is where TYG is your ally).

Sources of probiotics:

Fermented drinks have become increasingly popular, with kombucha and kefir available in most supermarkets, but do we actually know why we’re drinking them and their benefits? Interestingly, whilst kombucha is a great soft drink or even alcohol alternative, the probiotics found in kombucha aren’t native to the gut microbiome, meaning you’re not going to be replacing any good bacteria that you might be missing. Given it’s tea based, arguably one of the key benefits are its antioxidant properties. Kefir on the other hand does contain good bacteria, native to the microbiome and is a great source of B vitamins, which are key for energy production. Other sources include yoghurts, TYG and of course probiotic supplements.

What to consider with the strain of probiotic:

One of the biggest questions to ask yourself when it comes to probiotics is: will they actually reach my gut alive so I experience their benefits? After consumption, they’ve got to pass through the stomach to reach your gut. Our stomachs are highly acidic, as this is where chemical digestion of our food takes place. This acidic environment can kill probiotics before they even get to the gut if they’re not properly encapsulated. Most reputable brands will inform you of how their probiotic withstands stomach acid, like we do with TYG.

How long does it take for probiotic supplements to work?

The short answer: It depends. There are several factors that come into play, like why you’re taking the probiotic, the state of your health, and the strains you’re taking, to name a few. That being said, researchers have looked at the timeline for several common conditions that probiotics are known to support and found some similarities. If you put all the research together, the general consensus is that it can take anywhere from a couple of days to several weeks for your probiotics to start working. Consistency is key, supporting optimal gut health is all about creating healthy sustainable habits, there are no quick fixes sadly.

How you know if they’re working:

The best way to know if a probiotic is working for you is trying it consistently for a number of weeks and keeping track of any changes to your symptoms. Try keeping a symptom journal, so you can see if things are improving. The more severe or significant your symptoms before starting a probiotic, the easier it is to notice changes. Since probiotics are taken orally and must pass through the digestive tract, digestive symptoms are often the first ones to improve such as bowel movement consistency, frequency and gas, but don’t be surprised if you start to notice things like your skin improving, mood and even sleep patterns!

TYG is available now in three distinct flavours from Amazon and their website.

To try all 3 flavours, use the code ‘LIFEBOX20’ to get 20% off your first mixed crate!

“I am thrilled to have discovered TYG drinks – something I actually look forward to drinking as soon as I’m off the bike or back from a run. It’s so nice knowing I am doing something for my gut health and recovery, both of which are crucial to athletic performance and so easy to get wrong! I’m a convert and TYG is now firmly a part of my training routine”

Introducing the incredible Nopla Plastic-Free Chewing Gum

At Nopla, we want to take gum back to its roots, helping the planet along the way.

Regular gums are made out of a chewy plastic base similar to the plastic found in car tyres, which means it doesn’t degrade and sticks around on our pavements and in our oceans forever.

This wasn’t always the case; gum was originally made from tree-sap, until gum-makers got lazy (and greedy!).

Nopla gum is completely plastic-free, made from natural ingredients and fully biodegradable.

What is gum base and how is Nopla doing this differently?

‘Gum base’ is the main ingredient for chewing gum, it’s what makes chewing gum, gum – it gives chewing gum it’s structure, texture and chew.  Gum base was originally derived from natural ingredients, but gum companies settled for the cheaper, rubber-based alternative you chew today in the Sixties.

The actual make-up of gum base is a bit of a trade secret because chewing gum companies don’t have to tell you what’s in their gum, so all and any of the 46 ingredients that can make up the recipe are simply listed as ‘gum base’ on the back of a regular pack of gum.

The most common chemicals found in gum are synthetic polymers (better known as plastics or rubbers). The plastics used in gum base most often are butadiene-styrene, polyethylene, and polyvinyl acetate, the same plastics used to make car tyres, hose pipes and electrical wires ( 😱 ). Synthetic gum base is used because as well as being cheap, it’s versatile, holds other components such as flavouring well and has long-range elasticity.

The plastic rubber beads that go in gum base is what makes chewing gum non-biodegradable and the second biggest littering globally after cigarette butts. Gross!

What’s different about Nopla?

We believe that you shouldn’t have to compromise on flavour and chew to have an honest piece of chewing gum, so we’re doing things a little differently. We’ve taken gum base back to its roots and are using sustainably sourced chicle, making it fully biodegradable and plastic free.

Chicle based chewing gum started selling in 1848, the industry boomed worldwide during WWII and by the Sixties gum companies had switched to the cheaper synthetic rubber they use today.

Chicle is a type of tree-sap found in the Mexican rainforest. As well as the obvious benefits of the lack of plastic rubber, a chicle base is also great at holding natural flavourings and Xylitol which will freshen breath and keep teeth clean.

It’s sourced sustainability by local farmers, also known as Chicleros, meaning the farming practices of chicle helps the rainforest continue to thrive.

Fancy giving Nopla a try? We certainly don’t blame you – we absolutely adore this brand!

Discover more about Nopla:

  • Sugar-free and sweetened using Xylitol: Xylitol is a healthy, low-calorie, plant-based sweetener found in birch and beech trees, first discovered in Finland in the early 20th century. Xylitol is great for teeth as it kills 90% of bacteria, reduces plaque and naturalises acids, it also has a low GI of 7 so is suitable for people suffering with diabetes.
  • Natural flavouring: Our natural Peppermint, Spearmint and Eucalyptus flavours, are made from heating plant leaves or using enzymes to extract flavour compounds from plant ingredients.
  • Natural Softener: The smooth moist texture in Nopla is created with Sunflower Lecithin by dehydrating a sunflower and separating it into three parts: oil, gum, and solids. The Lecithin comes from the gum and is processed through a cold press.
  • Natural coating: Carnauba Wax coats our gum, it’s made from the leaves of the carnauba tree, it’s also known as Brazil Wax as its native to Brazil. The leaves are dried and beaten to loosen the wax.  Gum Arabic from the Australian acacia tree is the natural binder used to stick the wax to the gum base.

Raw and Wild Pili Nuts

In our October Lifebox you’ll find the incredible Raw & Wild who are masters of the nutritionally packed and delicious Pili Nut.

You might be wondering, what exactly is a Pili nut?

Raw & Wild wild harvest their nuts from Pili trees in the Bicol region in the Philippines.

Known as the ‘stress loving trees‘ due to their resilience to extreme weather conditions, Pili trees often have an abundance of fruits after typhoons and so are perfectly suited to this tropical, rainy region.

Similarly to a coconut, Pili fruits are dried in the sun before they are shelled! They are one tough nut to crack, so Raw & Wild employ the most skilled shell experts who use Bicolano machetes over a wooden board to break through their tough exterior. These experts are masters in precision, controlled strength and speed – a real art form!

Once shelled, Raw & Wild pre-sprout and rehydrate their Pili Nuts to preseve all the vital enzymes, minerals and nutrients. The activation process breaks down complex starch, neutralises the phytic acid found in all nuts and seeds and ignites the ‘life force‘ of the nut.

Are Pili nuts nutritious?

Pili nuts have an impressive nutritional  profile. They contain the highest amount of Vitamin E than any other nut, are very high in magnesium and Omega 9.

They are also the highest balanced fat whole food making them the perfect paleo snack that will keep you satiated all afternoon long.

On top of all that, they’re:

Low in Carbohydrates

Low GI

Keto Friendly

Good for Your Skin and Hair

Vegan, Gluten Free, Non-Gmo

High in Omega-9

Here at Lifebox, we’re a huge fan of Raw & Wild and their amazing range.

Link Nutrition – the missing link between food and supplements

Link Nutrition produce a comprehensive range of Food Based™ supplements designed for life in the modern world. Their products are the missing link between food and supplements, containing all the natural goodness of vitamins and minerals just as they are found in food.

What is Food Based?

Food Based supplements contain not just an isolated vitamin in a synthetic form, but a complete matrix of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and other naturally occurring substances. These components ensure effective delivery of nutrients to their site of action; maximising nutrient absorption whilst reducing the need for poorly-absorbed synthetic megadoses.

Food Based supplements are quite simply that; food. Link Nutrition’s products are made from real food, grown in a nutrient rich environment, and cultivated in a way that provides supplement level doses. Because of the unique way their products are manufactured, they can get rid of fillers, instead topping up each capsule with more of the good stuff.

Food Based supplements are also highly absorbable; they are structurally identical to the food we eat, so the body can absorb them more easily. Studies show that Food Based supplements are not excreted as quickly or significantly as synthetic supplements, a sign that your body is absorbing the nutrients and not just digesting them. What’s more, because Food Based supplements are complete with the cofactors that are found in nature, there is less risk of creating vitamin imbalances.

What’s Left Out Is Just As Important As What Goes In

Link Nutrition’s commitment to producing the best quality health supplements available means avoiding the fillers, binders and anticaking agents that feature in most synthetic supplements. The use of these chemical additives makes producing supplements cheaper, quicker and easier, and therefore they are used by almost all supplement manufacturers. By using capsules exclusively, they avoid the need to use binders and coating agents to make tablets stick together.

Sometimes the ideal daily dose of vitamins and minerals doesn’t match an exact capsule size. In these instances they still need to find a way to fill up the capsule. By using a special slow manufacturing process Link Nutritiona have found a way to do so by topping up the capsules with mushrooms, which work in synergy with the formulas to boost effectiveness. This means you get more of the good stuff, and none of the inactive chemical additives found in most supplements.

All ingredients used in their products are of the highest quality, non-GMO, and sourced from reputable suppliers. On top of this, they are then manufactured in the UK, adhering to strictly enforced quality standards.

Feed the craving without misbehaving

Our March Energy boxes include a delicious cacao & orange cookie from Wholey Moly; we caught up with them to find out a little more about the company and how they make their amazing cookies:

The idea for Wholey Moly came from our frustration at working in a corporate office where the 3pm energy slump is greeted with endless sugary short-term fixes that pick you up, then drop you back to zero an hour later, we still wanted that sweet treat, but why couldn’t it also be good for us?

When we looked in the market for alternative healthy snacks all we found were sugary snacks claiming to be healthy that actually aren’t that good for you.

So we decided to make our own nut and honey bars at home to take to work, work colleagues started asking what we were bringing in and after trying it asked for more themselves, it eventually evolved into a flapjack and then a cookie, and demand at both our workplaces were growing, at which point we had a light bulb moment –if there’s nothing in the market satisfying this problem and people are demanding it why don’t we turn this into a business and so Wholey Moly was born.

About Wholey Moly

At Wholey Moly we are on a mission to prove healthy doesn’t have to be boring, we do this by making healthy cookies which are made from 100% natural ingredients which have all the taste, loaded with nutrition but without any of the junk.

It wasn’t easy to create, we ripped up the baking manual and started from scratch, you won’t find any of the usual suspects in our cookies…no butter, refined sugars, empty calories or guilt, just honestly good cookies.

This means our cookies are vegan friendly and packed with nutrition. They are high in fibre, have as little as 5g of sugar which is 50% less than your average healthy snack bar and a source of protein. Plus the cookies are made from superfoods such as cacao, coconut oil, hemp, seeds and nuts, loading the cookies with vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and antioxidants.

All that aside, who can forget how delicious they taste!

It’s the the perfect 3pm pick me up to help you feed the craving without misbehaving!

Product spotlight: Beauty Formula by Potion London

Potion London makes the most amazing health and beauty supplements and we are super excited to feature the Beauty Formula, which promotes clear and healthy skin, strong nails and luscious, beautiful hair in this month’s Classic & Energy Lifeboxes.

We had the pleasure of speaking to Potion London and found out all about their fantastic product and how it came to be.

For those of you who don’t know Potion, briefly introduce yourself…

Potion London is a wellness brand selling health and beauty supplements. The supplements are sold in Harvey Nichols, Feelunique and at

What is the Potion ethos?

Potion helps to improve health and beauty from the inside-out. We believe that supplements should be used in addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle, to help ensure we’re getting the nutrients we need.

What are the health and beauty benefits of Potion products?

The range consists of health supplements such as The Probiotic which is a prebiotic and probiotic formula consisting of six strains of friendly bacteria. The health benefits include populating the gut with good bacteria which can help IBS, help improve the immune system, improve skin issues, improve gut issues like bloating. Eat Your Greens is a whole food formula made with spirulina, spinach, kale, beetroot, barley grass and wheat grass for a natural hit of nutrients to help boost the immune system and natural energy levels.

The beauty supplements in the range are The Collagen Boost which is marine collagen from fish, the most bio-available form of collagen. Collagen is the ‘scaffolding of the skin’. From our late twenties our bodies’ natural ability to produce collagen dramatically declines, and we start to notice sagging skin, and fine lines and wrinkles appearing. Taking a supplement can help to prevent premature signs of ageing for naturally youthful skin. The Hyaluronic Complex contains vitamin C and MSM which both contribute to collagen production, and hyaluronic acid which holds up to 1,000 times its own weight in water inside skin cells and so helps to keep skin hydrated and looking plump. The Beauty Formula is a targeted mix of 19 nutrients to help keep hair, skin and nails healthy.

What’s in The Beauty Formula and how will it work for us?

The Beauty Formula contains various vitamins and minerals chosen for their beauty-boosting properties including vitamin C which contributes to collagen formation, vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant which helps prevent and repair damage caused by the sun, smoking and pollution, zinc is essential for healthy and strong nails, biotin helps to nourish and prevent thinning and greying hair, pantothenic acid can help to prevent hair loss, and iron which can help to prevent hair loss.

Who should we buy Potion products for?

All of our supplements can be taken by both men and women. You don’t need to be unhealthy or be showing signs of ageing to start boosting your health and beauty from within!

How should we take The Beauty Formula?

Take one a day with a meal, and swallow with a glass of water. They can be taken at any time of the day. Each bottle contains 60 supplements which lasts for 2 months, so by the end of the bottle you should be seeing stronger nails, clearer skin and healthy hair.

How and why did you get involved with Lifebox?

Coincidentally I’m from the same town as where Jenny lives, and we often walk our dogs together. When the chance came up to work together we jumped at it.

What is your top wellness tip?

Get plenty of sleep!

Coocoo for Coyo! Coconut Yoghurt

We’ve partnered with healthy snack brand COYO before, makers of delicious coconut yoghurt and ice-cream. Unfortunately, as this is a chilled product we can’t include any in a Lifebox, but you can find these amazing dairy free, gluten free, vegan snacks in many supermarkets and health food shops – and we will be posting recipes that swap dairy yoghurt for COYO!

Bethany’s passion for health and nutrition began when she started to experience health issues following six years working in the police force with her husband Paul. Her new interest in health and nutrition lead Bethany to become a qualified nutritionist and she began working from her health practice in London. After working with clients in her practice that had various health concerns and specific dietary requirements, Bethany became passionate about providing a healthy, free from alternative to yoghurt, that was free from soy, dairy and refined sugars.

Bethany launched COYO in the UK as the UK’s first and only coconut milk yoghurt at that time and since then, Bethany, Paul and the entire COYO team have worked extremely hard for their coconut yoghurt range to become an established brand. Today COYO is stocked in Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Whole Foods, Selfridges as well as many independent health stores and is recognised by many famous foodies including Deliciously Ella and Nigella.

Bethany and her family, including Megan and James, her two children, trial every new flavour or recipe themselves, so you know all their products are bought to you with love and care.

The yacon – not just a strange little root from South America

Sometimes, choosing to eat healthily or mindfully can feel like a luxury only for the time rich and, well, rich rich. This is one of the many reasons we created Lifebox, to provide an easier solution to living a balanced lifestyle through delicious healthy snacks.

We all know that it sometimes seems easier to grab something in a small plastic box than to cook from scratch, but what effect does this have on both our mind and bodies?

We are always interested in learning from our peers and the leaders in the industry, and when the founder of G B CHEW, Lucy Ponsonby, wanted to share with us her knowledge about a certain “wonder plant” we couldn’t wait to hear more.

Lucy is a graduate of the prestigious Leiths School of Food & Wine and she began her company from the Green Bean Coffee Van, feeding people with busy and active lives. It was always compact, filling, on-the-go food, which was convenient while out and about.

Lucy believes that snacks don’t have to be full of salt and sugar to be satisfying and wants to spread the word of prebiotic yacon, a Peruvian root vegetable that is great for binding her vegan snack chews! Locals have also been cooking with it for years, thanks to its incredible health properties and versatility.

The yacon plant, a species of perennial daisy which traditionally grows in the northern and central Andes, has been eaten by the people of South America for thousands of years and is known for its sweetness and texture, similar to a pear or potato. The roots are very low in calories as most of the carbohydrate is in the form of indigestible fructooligosaccharide (FOS), which functions as a prebiotic, perfect for nourishing friendly bacteria in your stomach.

Here, Lucy discusses her love for the strange little root from South America…

“One of the most interesting things about the yacon plant is that despite originating in the Andean highlands, they grow really well here in the UK.  Recently, I have been growing my own yacon plants and have had some great success and was pretty excited to harvest our first batch of yacon roots!

After a year of growth, the tallest area of the plants were standing up to two meters high and I had noticed that a little yellow flower had blossomed. Knowing that we were about a week away from our first frost, it was time to get the fork, gloves and bucket out, and start digging under those roots!

Over the past couple of months, I have been showing our homegrown yacon roots – or tubers, as they are more commonly known – to my customers at events and explaining the many health benefits of both the plant and the syrup.

I have tried the yacon many different ways – I have eaten it raw, straight from the ground, I’ve boiled it, roasted it and even infused it into a gin and tonic! Raw, it has a crisp and crunchy texture with a sweet flavour similar to apple. Boiled, the skins peel off easily, ready to chop or mash.

I find the best way to store the yacon plants is in a cool potting shed, where they seem to grow quickly and abundantly. I have planted the rhizomes – which are little bulbs and samplings – into pots to start another year of growth. After a month in pots they will be ready to be planted into the ground.

Something I’m looking forward to trying when they are large enough is making a malty syrup to be used in cooking and both hot and cold drinks.”

How in touch are you with your gut?

Did you know that a multitude of stomach and health problems can be linked to the balance of flora in your digestive system?

If you’re ready to try something which truly works, then Symprove may just be the game-changing healthy snack you’ve been searching for.

Non-dairy, live activated bacteria, Symprove (known as Golden Nectar in our office!) is a 70ml shot of yellow liquid which is to be drunk first thing in the morning before food, and is designed to reset the bacteria in your intestinal tract.

Unlike other probiotics, it has been proven to reach the intestines and colonise there, if taken for the full 12 weeks. The bacteria in Symprove are water based and naturally occurring, with the only additional ingredients being vitamin C, sorbate and trisodium citrate, which are all found in natural everyday food.

Symprove will arrive the very next day after ordering and there are various options for buying, but we strongly recommend the 12 Week Programme for full effect. This programme is designed to help you successfully balance the bacteria in your gut. In fact, the team over at Symprove will reward you for committing to the programme by giving you the last 4 weeks free.

Flavour-wise, it isn’t unpleasant at all. The original has a distinctive malty taste and the mango and passionfruit – their most popular flavour – is sweet without being sickly. It’s also a completely gluten free snack which is pretty much the proverbial cherry on top. Yes, it’s a vegan snack, gluten free, healthy gut inducing wonder syrup right there!

The only thing to remember is that if you are travelling somewhere warm, remember to keep your Symprove refrigerated or, if a fridge isn’t available, in a sink full of cold water.

Many IBS sufferers worldwide have alleviated their symptoms by trying Symprove – why not give it a go and see if it can change your life too?

Our founder Jen is an utter Symprove champion – here is what she has to say about our favourite “Golden Nectar”:

“I first tried Symprove after a wonderful nutritionist friend suggested it would be beneficial to help my gut during a rather prolonged period of disc prolapse back pain prior to an operation that I was scheduled to have. I was taking a horrendous concoction of anti inflammatories and pain relief to ensure that I could stay operational at work and it was playing havoc with my digestive system… bloating, constipation… you name it. After just a few days of taking Symprove in the morning (and this was back in 2014) I felt like a new woman! My bowel movements became more regular and my bloating considerably reduced… the positive effects were so great that I have continued to take Symprove regularly since that horrid time! It is also the reason that I continue to support Symprove as a brand AND why I will always recommend it to friends and Lifebox customers to try it out for themselves or purchase it as a subscription gift… it always make something so much easier to promote and shout about when you have experienced the benefits of a product first hand!  All hail Symprove.“

Including these skin foods as a regular part of your weekly diet or through healthy snacks can help you to achieve flawless skin. Marie Claire made by Lifebox Presents: BetterYou

As part of our Marie Claire by Lifebox ‘Winter Skin edition,’ we caught up with each of our wonderful subscription gift box partners about their fantastic products. We discovered the story of how the products came to be and discussed their excitement to be featured in Marie Claire by Lifebox.

BetterYou’s amazing supplements are the reason they’re one of the country’s leading supplement suppliers. They have a range of nourishing, health-boosting products such as; Magnesium Gel, Multivitamin Oral Spray, Body Butter plus many more fantastic products. We caught up with BetterYou and found out all about their brand and their love for health and beauty.

For those who don’t know what you do, briefly introduce us to BetterYou?

BetterYou is a natural health company specialising in oral vitamin sprays and transdermal (through the skin) magnesium.

Focusing on improving nutrients which are increasingly omitted in today’s modern diets and lifestyles, BetterYou has developed a growing range of innovative and effective products which benefit from delivery mechanisms* proven to provide superior absorption than traditional tablets or capsules.

At the leading edge of innovation, BetterYou was one of the first natural health companies to launch an oral vitamin spray and transdermal magnesium range. The company’s success has been underpinned by continual ground-breaking research and a passion to find quality natural ingredients that are absorbed well and utilised by the body.

Over the last decade, the company has won more than 30 industry awards for its products which demonstrate the cutting edge of innovation and effectiveness.

*sprays, flakes, gel, oils, butter and lotions.

How did you come up with the idea?

Andrew Thomas founded BetterYou in 2007 following a chance encounter with a biochemist called Juan Rosello in the States, who introduced him to the science behind transdermal magnesium (applying magnesium through the skin), which was being used for competitive advantage at the time, primarily in the American sports industry.

Juan introduced Andrew to the mine in Northern Holland and it was from this point that he properly understood the quality of the source of magnesium and, for Andrew, being an asthmatic, it transformed his life. Using magnesium chloride through the skin enabled Andrew to stop his reliance on steroid-based inhalers, which he’s now not taken for over nine years.

Andrew used his own personal experience to create quality products that can have a positive impact on the quality of people’s lives.

Who are the team at BetterYou?

BetterYou is comprised of 36 individuals passionate about changing the health and well-being of the nation.

Talk to us about supplements and why should we be having them?

Our need for magnesium has never been so great. Modern diet and pressured lifestyles have resulted in a drastically poor magnesium intake, significantly lower than anything experienced before.

More than 70 percent of people in the UK has low magnesium levels, according to research by the laboratory Mineral Check. And the Government’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey revealed that most children and adolescents fail to get the recommended daily allowance with 53 percent of teenage girls showing levels of gross deficiency.

Although magnesium can be obtained via rich dietary sources (cereal, dark green vegetables, nuts and seeds), it is difficult to guarantee a regular and significant intake. It’s highly recommended that magnesium supplementation is introduced into your daily routine to help replenish your levels. However, the mineral is poorly absorbed when taken orally – too much can have you rushing to the toilet!

The answer is for it to be absorbed through the skin, using the BetterYou magnesium range.

A study published in the European Journal of Neutraceutical Research has shown that magnesium absorbed through the skin works five times faster than tablets. The mineral gets taken in through the pores and directly into the blood vessels and muscles.

Who would you buy BetterYou supplements for?

Everyone! The company offers a range of magnesium products which are applied to the skin, including sprays, gel, body butter and lotion, bath flakes and soaks.

How and why did you get involved with Lifebox?

BetterYou is proud of its association with LifeBox – a brand that shares its ethos of providing consumers with healthy snacks, and natural products to set them on a journey to a healthier lifestyle.

The partnership began which Lifebox approached BetterYou to feature it’s MagnesiumOil Spray as part of the highly curated subscription gift box.

When is the best time to take BetterYou?

BetterYou products can be taken at any time as they don’t rely on the digestive system and don’t need to be taken with food or water.

What is your top wellness tip?

For a natural way to unwind, achieve a great night’s sleep and wake to feel refreshed, treat yourself to a 20-minute bath soak with BetterYou Magnesium Flakes bath followed by a couple of sprays of MagnesiumOil.

Marie Claire made by Lifebox Presents A Sweet Vegan Snack: Ombar

As part of our Marie Claire by Lifebox ‘Winter Skin edition,’ we spoke to each of our wonderful partners about their fantastic products. We discovered the story of how the products came to be and discussed their excitement to be featured in this seasons must-have subscription gift – Marie Claire by Lifebox.

Deliciously crafted, sweet cocoa chocolate is what vegan snack brand, Ombar pride themselves on. Their products are both sweet and healthy, what more could you ask for? We spoke to the good people of Ombar about their healthy snacks and their involvement in Lifebox.

For those who don’t know what you do, briefly introduce us to Mood Foods Ombar?

We think cacao is pretty incredible. So at Ombar, we keep it raw.

Most chocolate is made by roasting cacao at high heat, which reduces its natural goodness. Because our cacao goes through a low-temp process, it stays choc-full of the nutrients and rich flavours that nature intended.

Looking for a vegan snack or tasty treat? Made with live cultures and free of refined sugar and dairy, Ombar is chocolate you can feel good about.

What is the Mood Foods Ombar ethos?

We believe in the power of raw cacao, and in a healthier, more nourishing chocolate, without compromising on taste.

What are the health benefits of the Ombar products?

Our chocolate contains raw cacao, which is choc-full of nutrients such as magnesium, iron and manganese, and contains up to six times more flavanols than conventional chocolate containing roasted cacao.

Not only have we ditched the roasting process in making Ombar, but we’ve ditched the dairy as well. We believe a plant-based diet is better for our bodies and for the planet – to us, it just makes sense. We also use only unrefined coconut sugar, and whole fruits and powders rather than fruit flavourings. We even include a dose of live cultures in some of our flavours!

All of our chocolate is organic, all-natural, gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free, and suitable for vegan snacks.

What is the process when it comes to sourcing ingredients?

We source our raw cacao directly from farmers’ cooperatives in Ecuador, where we work closely with the communities to ensure fair compensation. We even invest directly into some of the communities to improve farming and harvesting practices, ensuring a higher quality product which yields a better price for the farmers, and a better ingredient for our chocolate.

Who should we buy the Ombar for?

Whether you eat the entire Ombar yourself or share it with loved ones, Ombar is chocolate you can feel good about.

When is the best time to enjoy an Ombar?

Indulge in your #OmMoment whenever you get the urge! Whether topping your morning porridge, nibbling on-the-go, or devouring an entire bar after dinner, Ombar is great for a daily dose of raw cacao.

How and why did you get involved with Lifebox?

Like Lifebox, we too believe in whole, real, good, natural food. When Lifebox reached out to us for a partnership we didn’t even think of resisting. We love their mission to get the nation excited about eating well and of course, we wanted to get involved.

What is your top wellness tip?

Despite being super busy running a business, a chocolate factory, and even making the chocolate himself, our founder, Richard, still makes time to meditate for 10 minutes every day. Focusing and quieting the mind helps to empower healthier choices in life. And at Ombar, we’re all about healthier choices!

Where can we find out more about Ombar and other Mood Foods products (we don’t have any other products)?
